How to Play Hand and Foot

Hand and Foot Rules PrintableNow that you have your score sheets ready, let’s dive into the rules of Hand and Foot. The game is typically played with 4-6 players in teams of two. The objective of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your hand and foot, while earning the most points along the way. It’s a combination of strategy and luck, which makes it super exciting!

Each player is dealt two sets of cards: a hand and a foot. The hand consists of 11 cards and the foot consists of 13 cards. The remaining cards are placed in the center of the table to form the stockpile.

The game is played in rounds, and each round has two phases: the hand phase and the foot phase. In the hand phase, players must try to get rid of all the cards in their hand by forming sets and runs. Sets are groups of three or more cards of the same rank, while runs are three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.

Once a player has laid down all their cards from their hand, they can move on to the foot phase. In the foot phase, players can start melding cards from their foot, adding to the sets and runs they already have on the table. The round continues until one team has gotten rid of all their cards, at which point the round ends and the scores are calculated.

The scoring in Hand and Foot is based on the value of the cards that are melded. Each card has a point value: threes through eights are worth 5 points, nines through kings are worth 10 points, and aces and twos are worth 20 points. Points are also awarded for any red threes, wild cards, and canastas (seven or more cards of the same rank).

This is just a brief overview of the rules, but don’t worry, I’ve got a handy printable that lays out all the details for you. You can find it here!
